The Ngong Ping 360 cable car is the scenic way up to the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, but it doesn’t run every day. It pauses for scheduled maintenance (three blocks in 2026), and it can be suspended for bad weather such as thunderstorms, rainstorms, lightning, strong wind or typhoon signals. On a clear weekend you may also face long queues. This page helps you decide on the day between the cable car, Lantau Bus 23 and a Lantau taxi. Facts were checked on 2026-10-08 against np360.com.hk and plm.org.hk. Always confirm on the day. For the full route guide, see how to get to Big Buddha Hong Kong.

Is Ngong Ping 360 running today? Check these first
- Official notice bar: np360.com.hk posts special announcements (maintenance, weather, changed hours) at the top of its site. Check it the morning you travel, and again before leaving Tung Chung.
- Usual hours (official snapshot): weekdays about 10:00am–6:00pm; Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays about 9:00am–6:30pm. Festive and designated dates can differ.
- Hong Kong Observatory: look for thunderstorm, rainstorm or tropical cyclone warnings. Wind on the Ngong Ping plateau is often stronger than in town.
- Big Buddha hours are separate (Po Lin lists 10am–5:30pm for the Buddha). See Po Lin Monastery & Big Buddha opening hours.
Ngong Ping 360 scheduled maintenance
- What happens: on scheduled servicing days the cable car stops, while Ngong Ping Village stays open. You can still reach the Big Buddha by Bus 23 or taxi.
- 2026 pattern: maintenance closures were reported for 12–20 May, 2–21 June (including a major haul-rope replacement) and 8–18 September. The September block finished a day early, and service resumed on 18 September.
- Rest of 2026: on 2026-10-08 the official visitor page showed no further scheduled maintenance days. Dates are announced in advance, so check again before you travel.
- Tip: if your trip falls in a maintenance block, plan Bus 23 both ways and keep the cable car for another visit.
Ngong Ping 360 in bad weather
- Official line: in inclement weather, such as a rainstorm or thunderstorm, the cable car may be suspended depending on actual conditions. The operator decides on the day.
- Design limits (government record): the system was designed to pause for Typhoon Signal No. 8 and above, Black Rainstorm warnings, lightning and very strong winds. The operator may stop earlier for safety. After short lightning or wind spells, service usually resumes fairly quickly.
- If it pauses mid-trip: follow staff instructions. If you’re already at Ngong Ping and the cable car is suspended, plan to come down by Bus 23 or a Lantau taxi, and check they’re running too.
- Typhoon season (roughly summer to autumn): keep a flexible day in your itinerary for Lantau.
Beating the Ngong Ping 360 queues
- Arrive at opening, especially on weekends, public holidays and holiday weeks. Late-morning and mid-afternoon return queues are usually the longest.
- Buy only from official or authorised channels. Ngong Ping 360 warns that tickets from unofficial sites may be voided.
- Go up by cable car, down by Bus 23 (or the reverse) to skip the late-afternoon return queue, as long as your ticket type allows it.
- Travel light: bags larger than about 48 × 34 × 23 cm or heavier than 4 kg aren’t allowed in the cabin. Left-luggage counters are available at the terminals.
- Cabin types: Standard, Crystal (glass floor) and Crystal+ cabins take the same route at the same speed. The choice is about the view, not the time.
- Walking: the Tung Chung terminal is about 5 minutes from Tung Chung MTR Exit B.
Ngong Ping 360, Bus 23 or taxi: decide on the day
- Clear skies, cable running, short queue: take the cable car. It’s about 25 minutes in the air, then about a 10-minute walk to the monastery (per Po Lin).
- Maintenance, warnings or a long queue: take New Lantao Bus 23 from the bus station outside Tung Chung MTR to Ngong Ping. It’s about 45 minutes (per Po Lin), with a winding mountain road, so bring travel-sickness tablets if you need them.
- Small group, tight timing or limited mobility: a Lantau Island taxi, which Po Lin lists as an option. Expect a mountain-road journey, and confirm the cost with the driver.
- Fear of heights: the bus or taxi is the calmer choice.
- Sundays and public holidays: Ngong Ping 360 also lists New Lantao Bus 1R from Hung Hom Ferry Pier to Ngong Ping.
