Tsz Shan Monastery (慈山寺) in Tai Po is free to visit, but only by advance online registration. This applies to overseas visitors too. The official rules (checked 2026-10-08): register 1–30 days ahead (no same-day bookings), up to 6 people per booking, and the registrant must be 18 or over and stay with the party for the visit. On arrival, show your confirmation e-mail, SMS or booking reference plus proof of identification. For most tourists that will be a passport, though the official wording just says “proof of identification”. The monastery charges no fee and does not endorse paid third-party agents. Rules can change, so always confirm on the official Tsz Shan Monastery website.

How to book Tsz Shan Monastery from overseas: step by step
- Pick your date within the next 1–30 days. Book as soon as your Hong Kong dates are fixed, since popular days fill up.
- Open the registration page from the official Tsz Shan Monastery website (tszshan.org → Visit → registration). Use only the official site.
- Choose the number of visitors (1–6, including you), then the date and an available entry time.
- Enter the registrant’s details as requested. Use the name on the ID you will carry, and an e-mail you can check while travelling.
- Submit and save the confirmation. The confirmation e-mail shows your reference number, date, entry time and number of visitors. Screenshot it in case you’re offline on the day.
- Watch for the reminder e-mail, sent about 3 working days before your visit.
- On the day, arrive on time with the confirmation and your ID. Staff issue a visitor pass, which must be worn during the visit.
ID and check-in on the day
- What to show: the confirmation e-mail, SMS or booking reference number and proof of identification. Overseas visitors usually carry a passport. If your trip ID is something else, check the official site first.
- Registrant present: the registrant must come and stay with the party for the whole slot. A booking can’t be handed to someone else.
- Late arrival: arriving 30+ minutes after your slot may be treated as a late cancellation.
- Not a tourist attraction: the monastery describes itself as a place for Buddhist practice, not a tourist attraction. Visitors follow its guidelines.
Changes, cancellations and no-shows
- Reschedule or cancel online at least 1 day before your visit.
- Repeated cancellations (3 or more in a row) can block new registrations for 3 months.
- Repeated late cancellations or no-shows (3 or more) can block new registrations for 6 months.
- If your plans fall through, cancel so the slot goes back to other visitors.
Families and groups
- Families of up to 6: one adult registers for everyone. Children under 12 stay with an adult.
- More than 6 people: one individual booking can’t cover the whole party. Check the official site before planning a larger visit.
- Group visits are for registered non-profit organisations, booked well ahead with supporting documents. Overseas non-profit groups are asked to e-mail the monastery. The English and Chinese terms list different addresses (group.visit@tszshan.org / visit@tszshan.org), so check the current page. Commercial tour groups aren’t part of this scheme.
